Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Alocasia ‘Polly’, also known as the African Mask Plant or Amazonian Elephant Ear, is a compact hybrid cultivar from the Araceae family. Although often associated with the Amazon rainforest, this plant is actually a man-made hybrid of tropical Asian Alocasia species, bred for its dramatic foliage and manageable indoor size.
The leaves are the main attraction – glossy, arrow-shaped, and a deep, almost black-green, highlighted with bold, contrasting white veins. The leaf edges are wavy and dramatic, giving the plant its exotic, mask-like appearance. The undersides of the leaves are a rich purple, adding an extra layer of colour contrast.
Typically growing to around 45–60 cm tall, Alocasia ‘Polly’ is more compact than many larger Alocasia relatives, making it ideal for tabletops, desks, or decorative corners in bright interiors. Its bold, architectural form makes it a true statement piece, even at a modest size.
Prefers bright, indirect light. It tolerates some shade but will not thrive in very low light, which can cause leaf yellowing or slowed growth. Avoid direct sun, which may scorch the leaves.
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil begins to dry. Reduce watering slightly in winter when growth slows, but never allow the soil to dry out completely.
Temperature: Thrives in 18–26°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C, as cold can trigger stress or dormancy.
Humidity: High humidity is essential. Aim for 60%+, mist regularly, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier to prevent crispy leaf edges.
Use a chunky, free-draining aroid mix such as peat-free compost blended with perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and encourage growth.
Apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer. Reduce feeding in autumn and stop in winter.
Like many Alocasia, ‘Polly’ may enter dormancy in cooler months, during which some or all leaves may die back. If this happens, reduce watering but keep the tuber just moist. New growth will reappear in spring.
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to keep the plant healthy. Wipe leaves regularly to maintain their glossy appearance.
This is a moderately fast-growing plant during spring and summer. Mature plants usually reach 45–60 cm tall, producing a clump of bold, sculptural leaves.
Yellowing leaves: Often due to overwatering.
Crispy edges: Linked to low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Leaf drop in winter: Normal dormancy; reduce care until spring regrowth.
Pests: May attract spider mites, mealybugs, or thrips – check undersides of leaves.
Although not from the Amazon, Alocasia ‘Polly’ has become one of the most popular ornamental hybrids due to its dramatic, mask-like leaves and more compact size compared to larger elephant ear plants. It’s perfect for adding a touch of the exotic to homes, offices, and conservatories.
