Calathea roseopicta 'Rosy' is a cultivar of the Calathea genus known for its striking pink-colored leaves. This tropical plant, native to Brazil, is a member of the Marantaceae family, often called prayer plants due to their unique leaf movements where they raise and lower their leaves from day to night.

Description:

  • Leaves: Rounded leaves that display a deep pink to rose color at the center which fades to a dark green towards the edges. The undersides of the leaves are typically a deep purple. As with other Calatheas, 'Rosy' also exhibits the "prayer movement", where the leaves move up and down with the day-night cycle.

  • Flowers: While Calatheas can produce flowers, they are not the main attraction. The flowers are usually small and less showy compared to the foliage.

Care Guide:

  1. Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can fade the leaf color and cause brown edges.

  2. Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Using filtered or distilled water is best, as Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals found in tap water, which can cause brown leaf tips.

  3. Soil: A well-draining potting mix is ideal. A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir works well.

  4. Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 65°F (18°C) and 75°F (24°C). Avoid drafts and sudden temperature changes.

  5. Humidity: High humidity is crucial for Calatheas. Maintain a humidity level above 50%. Misting, using a humidity tray, or a room humidifier can help increase humidity.

  6. Fertilization: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.

  7. Pruning: Trim off any yellow or brown leaves to keep the plant looking fresh and vibrant.

  8. Propagation: Propagation is typically done by division during repotting.

  9. Pests and Diseases: Spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids can sometimes be an issue. Check regularly for pests beneath leaves and in leaf axils. If detected, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

  10. Repotting: Repot when the plant becomes root-bound or the soil appears exhausted. Typically, every 1-2 years is sufficient.

Final Notes:

Calathea roseopicta 'Rosy' is renowned for its vibrant pink leaves, making it a sought-after plant for houseplant enthusiasts. However, Calatheas can be a bit finicky and require consistent care. Regularly checking the plant's health and adjusting its environment as needed will ensure it remains healthy and vibrant.
