When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. Alocasia scabriuscula is an extraordinary and highly sought-after miniature aroid, revered for its intensely textured foliage and jewel-like appearance. Native to Myanmar (Burma) and belonging to the Araceae family, this species stands out for its rugged, sculptural leaves and compact, ground-level growth β making it one of the most unique Alocasias in cultivation.
Unlike the broad-leaf giants of the genus, Alocasia scabriuscula produces small, deeply ridged leaves with a striking, almost reptilian surface texture. The leaves are typically a rich bluish-green to deep emerald, with sharply raised venation that creates a bold, three-dimensional effect. Their slightly velvety finish and dramatic contouring give the plant a luxurious, tactile quality. Petioles are short, stout, and often lightly patterned.
Compact, dramatic, and full of character, this species is perfect for collectors who appreciate highly textured foliage and miniature aroids with a rainforest-floor feel.
Prefers medium, diffused light β similar to its natural understory conditions. Too much bright light can flatten its texture or cause leaf burn, while low light may reduce contrast and slow growth. Ideal for terrariums and plant cabinets.
Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist, allowing only the top 1β2 cm to dry between waterings. Do not let the soil fully dry out. Avoid standing water, as this species is sensitive to root rot.
Temperature: Thrives at 20β28 Β°C. Avoid temperatures below 16 Β°C or sudden temperature dips.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (70β90%) to maintain its strong texture and prevent crisping or leaf curl. Perfect for terrariums, vivariums, or greenhouse environments.
Use a loose, moisture-retentive but airy mix. Ideal components include fine orchid bark, sphagnum moss, coco peat, and perlite. This ensures roots receive both moisture and oxygen. Repot carefully every 1β2 years; the plant has a delicate root system.
Feed every 4β6 weeks during spring and summer with a weak, balanced fertiliser. Avoid heavy feeding.
Remove old or yellowing leaves from the base to encourage fresh growth. Avoid excessive touching β the textured leaf surface can be delicate. Maintain gentle airflow to prevent fungal issues in high humidity.
A slow to moderate grower that typically reaches 10β20 cm in height. Over time, it forms a dense, sculptural mound of highly textured foliage. Growth slows noticeably in cooler conditions or lower humidity.
Crispy edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Flattened texture: Too much light.
Pests: Watch for spider mites and thrips in dry conditions.
Alocasia scabriuscula is prized among rare aroid collectors for its unusual scale-like texture and compact size. It brings a dramatic visual contrast to plant displays, offering bold structure in a small footprint. This species resembles a miniature prehistoric relic, making it a standout in terrarium landscapes and curated cabinet collections.
Its diminutive growth habit and rich colour make it perfect for close-up viewing in micro-jungle arrangements, where its reptilian texture can be fully appreciated.
