If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’ is a cultivated form of the highly variable Hoya verticillata species (formerly grouped under Hoya acuta). It is particularly admired for its refined foliage, elegant vining habit and reliable flowering once mature. Compared to some chunkier Hoyas, ‘Lavia’ has a more graceful, balanced appearance, making it an excellent choice for both collectors and confident beginners.
In nature, Hoya verticillata grows as an epiphyte across parts of Southeast Asia, where it experiences warm temperatures, high humidity, bright filtered light and excellent airflow. Replicating these conditions indoors is the key to long-term success.
Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’ produces medium-sized, oval to elliptical leaves with a smooth, slightly glossy surface. The foliage is typically rich green and may develop subtle textural interest or gentle veining as the plant matures. Leaves grow in opposing or whorled arrangements along the stem, which gives the plant a tidy, rhythmic appearance.
The plant has a vigorous trailing and climbing growth habit, producing long, flexible vines that can be allowed to cascade from shelves or trained neatly around a hoop or trellis. Growth is usually steady rather than rapid, resulting in a well-proportioned plant over time.
Flowering is a major attraction. Mature plants produce rounded umbels of star-shaped, waxy flowers, often creamy white to pale pink with a contrasting central corona. Blooms are typically fragrant, especially in the evening, and may produce visible nectar. Like most Hoyas, flowers form on persistent spurs and can rebloom from the same points year after year.
Bright, indirect light is ideal for Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’. A position near an east- or west-facing window is perfect, where the plant receives plenty of light without prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun.
Gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can be beneficial and may encourage flowering. Too little light will result in slower growth, longer internodes and a reluctance to bloom. Consistency matters more than intensity, so try to avoid frequent changes in position.
Watering should follow a soak-and-dry approach. Allow the top layer of the growing medium to dry out between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess moisture drains freely from the pot.
During spring and summer, watering will be more regular as the plant is actively growing. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly, as cooler temperatures and shorter days slow growth and increase the risk of root rot.
Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’ tolerates short periods of dryness far better than sitting in wet compost. Soft, yellowing leaves or a sour smell from the soil usually indicate overwatering, while slight leaf softness or wrinkling suggests the plant is ready for a drink.
This Hoya prefers warm, stable conditions, ideally between 18–27°C. It should be kept away from cold draughts, unheated rooms and chilly windowsills, particularly in winter. Prolonged exposure to temperatures below 12°C can cause stress and leaf drop.
Moderate to high humidity supports healthy growth and flowering. While it adapts to average household humidity, it performs best when humidity is consistently above 50%. Increased humidity should always be paired with good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal problems.
A free-draining, airy growing medium is essential. In its natural environment, this plant’s roots are exposed to air and dry quickly between rainfalls. A chunky mix containing orchid bark, perlite or pumice, and a small amount of peat-free compost or coco coir works well.
Choose a pot that fits the root ball closely rather than oversizing. Hoyas prefer to be slightly root-bound, and frequent repotting can delay flowering. Terracotta pots are a good option, as they help regulate moisture levels.
Feed lightly during the growing season. From spring to late summer, apply a balanced houseplant fertiliser at half strength every four to six weeks. This supports steady growth and flower production without overwhelming the plant.
Avoid feeding during autumn and winter, when growth slows naturally.
Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’ benefits from gentle training early on. Guiding vines around a hoop or trellis helps maintain a tidy shape and makes flowers easier to display.
Pruning should be minimal and limited to removing damaged, weak or excessively long stems. Never remove flower spurs, as these are reused for future blooms.
Flowering usually occurs once the plant is mature and well settled. Stability is essential. Avoid moving the plant or changing conditions abruptly when buds are forming, as this can cause bud drop.
Bright indirect light, warm temperatures, consistent watering and a slightly root-bound pot all contribute to reliable flowering. Patience is key, as Hoyas often bloom on their own timeline.
Propagation is straightforward using stem cuttings with at least two nodes. Cuttings can be rooted in water or in a well-draining propagation mix. Warmth, humidity and bright indirect light will encourage rooting, typically within a few weeks.
Hoya verticillata ‘Lavia’ is an elegant, rewarding plant that combines attractive foliage with dependable flowering once mature. It is not demanding but does require consistency, excellent drainage and respect for its epiphytic nature. Given time and stable care, it becomes a beautiful, long-lasting feature plant.
