Variegated Green Congo Philodendron is a rare and impressive self-heading philodendron with large, broad leaves marked by dramatic splashes of cream, white and lime variegation. The rich green foliage contrasts beautifully with the lighter markings, creating a bold, tropical look. Every leaf is different, with some showing subtle marbling and others producing large sectors of bright variegation.

Unlike climbing philodendrons, Green Congo grows in a compact, upright form. It develops thick stems and large, glossy leaves that rise from the centre of the plant, creating a full and architectural shape. Mature plants can become very substantial and make an eye-catching statement in any room.

Care Guide

Light
Variegated Green Congo Philodendron prefers bright, indirect light. Strong light helps maintain the variegation and encourages healthy growth. Avoid direct sun, especially on the pale areas of the leaves, as this can cause scorching. In lower light the plant may become greener and lose some of its variegation.

Watering
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering. Water thoroughly, then let excess water drain away. Green Congo dislikes sitting in wet soil and overwatering can quickly lead to root problems.

Humidity
This philodendron enjoys moderate to high humidity, ideally above 50–60%. It can adapt to normal household humidity, but higher humidity will help keep the leaves looking their best and reduce browning on the variegated sections.

Temperature
Keep between 18–28°C and avoid temperatures below 15°C. Protect the plant from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.

Soil
Use a loose, airy houseplant compost with good drainage. A mix of houseplant compost, orchid bark and perlite works very well.

Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.

Variegated Green Congo is a self-heading philodendron and does not require a moss pole or support. It naturally forms a full, upright plant.
