Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. Darmera peltata, commonly known as umbrella plant or Indian rhubarb, is a perennial plant native to North America. It is a member of the Saxifragaceae family. Darmera peltata is characterized by its large, round, umbrella-like leaves that emerge on tall, sturdy stalks. The leaves are deeply lobed and can reach a diameter of up to 12 inches (30 cm). In early spring, before the leaves appear, clusters of pink or white flowers emerge on separate stalks above the foliage. The flowers add an attractive touch to the plant before the leaves fully unfurl.
Care Guide:
Light Requirements: Darmera peltata thrives in partial shade to full shade. While it can tolerate some morning sun, it prefers locations with filtered or dappled sunlight or areas that receive shade for most of the day. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves.
Soil Requirements: Provide Darmera peltata with moist, well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH level of around 6.0 to 7.0. The plant is particularly suited to damp or boggy areas, making it an excellent choice for water gardens or near the edges of ponds or streams.
Watering: Darmera peltata requires consistently moist soil. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during the growing season. Ensure the plant receives regular watering, particularly in dry periods. It can tolerate some temporary waterlogging, but excessive or prolonged waterlogging can be detrimental.
Fertilization: Darmera peltata generally does not require heavy fertilization. However, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer package for dosage and application.
Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and maintain a cool root environment. Ensure the mulch is not in direct contact with the plant's stem.
Pruning: Minimal pruning is necessary for Darmera peltata. After the leaves die back in autumn, you can remove them to tidy up the plant's appearance. Additionally, remove any dead or damaged foliage throughout the year. Avoid cutting back the plant to the ground, as the old stems can protect the plant during winter.
Propagation: Darmera peltata can be propagated through division. In early spring or early autumn, lift and divide the plant into smaller sections, making sure each division has sufficient roots and growing points. Replant the divisions in suitable locations, keeping the soil moist until they establish.
Pests and Diseases: Darmera peltata is generally not susceptible to serious pest or disease issues. However, keep an eye out for snails or slugs, which can occasionally feed on the foliage. Use appropriate measures to control them if necessary.
Winter Care: Darmera peltata is hardy and can tolerate cold temperatures. In colder regions, the plant may die back to the ground in winter and reemerge in spring. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to provide some insulation and protect the roots during extreme cold.
Darmera peltata is a beautiful, architectural plant that can add a striking presence to shaded or water garden areas. With its attractive foliage and delicate flowers, it brings a unique charm to any landscape. With proper care and maintenance, it will thrive and provide years of enjoyment.
