Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Ooi’ is an exceptionally rare and visually captivating form of this already-beloved iridescent ginger species. A member of the Zingiberaceae family and native to the lush, shaded rainforests of Southeast Asia, this cultivar is prized for its extraordinary metallic sheen, rich pigmentation, and compact, jewel-like appearance.
The ‘Ooi’ form is distinguished by its intensely iridescent leaves, which shimmer with tones of emerald, jade, violet, and deep graphite depending on the angle of light. The velvety leaf surface creates a soft glow, while fine, contrasting veining adds depth and structure. Typically darker than the standard form, ‘Ooi’ features more pronounced iridescence and purplish undertones, making each leaf look like a piece of polished gemstone.
Growing close to the forest floor, Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Ooi’ forms a neat rosette from short rhizomes, giving it a refined, compact presence. Enchanting and highly decorative, this variety is a dream plant for terrarium enthusiasts, collectors of rare foliage, and anyone seeking a truly magical understory species.
Prefers low to medium, diffused light. Too much light will wash out its iridescence and may cause leaf scorch. Ideal for terrariums, shaded plant cabinets, or rooms with gentle, filtered lighting that enhances the shimmering leaf texture.
Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist, allowing the top 1–2 cm to dry slightly before watering again. Avoid complete dryness or heavy, waterlogged conditions. Use filtered or rainwater to prevent mineral spotting on the velvety leaves.
Temperature: Thrives at 20–28 °C. Avoid cold draughts and do not expose to temperatures below 15 °C.
Humidity: Extremely high humidity (70–90%) is essential. This plant performs best in terrariums, vivariums, or climate-controlled plant cabinets.
Use a lightweight, moisture-retentive yet breathable mix. A combination of fine orchid bark, sphagnum moss, coco peat, and perlite works well. Avoid compact soils that may suffocate the delicate roots. Repot every 1–2 years into a shallow pot suited to its rhizomatous growth.
Feed lightly every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a gentle fertiliser. Strong feeds can overwhelm the plant's fine root system.
Remove any old or damaged leaves at their base. Avoid wiping the velvety surface — instead, maintain gentle airflow or use a soft brush to remove dust. Keep water off the leaf surface to prevent spotting.
A slow to moderate grower, typically reaching 10–20 cm in height and spread. Over time, the rhizomes will form a compact clump. With perfect conditions, the plant may produce delicate ginger-like blooms near soil level in shades of purple or pink.
Leaf curl or crisping: Low humidity or underwatering.
Dull colouring: Too much light or insufficient humidity.
Yellowing: Overwatering or poorly draining substrate.
Fungal spotting: Moisture left on leaves.
Pests: Rare, but fungus gnats may appear in overly wet soil.
Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Ooi’ represents one of the most desirable forms of the species, treasured for its intense iridescence and deep, jewel-toned colours. It brings an ethereal, almost fantasy-like quality to plant displays and terrariums, creating a rainforest atmosphere in miniature.
Because of its compact size and silken texture, ‘Ooi’ is often used as a centrepiece in enclosed environments, where its shimmering leaves catch and reflect soft artificial lighting. A true collector’s piece, it offers rare beauty in a small footprint.
