Maranta Care

How to water a Maranta

by Plants for all Seasons 17 Mar 2023

Watering a Maranta plant properly is crucial for its overall health and growth. Follow these steps to ensure you're providing the right amount of water for your Maranta:

  1. Check soil moisture: Before watering, check the moisture level of the soil by touching it with your finger. Marantas prefer consistently moist soil, so you should water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch.

  2. Use filtered, room-temperature water: Maranta plants can be sensitive to chemicals found in tap water, such as chlorine and fluoride. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater at room temperature to avoid causing stress to your plant.

  3. Water evenly: Water your Maranta plant evenly around the base, making sure to moisten the entire root zone. Avoid pouring water directly onto the leaves, as this can lead to fungal issues.

  4. Drain excess water: Ensure your Maranta is in a pot with drainage holes, allowing excess water to escape. This helps prevent root rot and other water-related problems. After watering, let the pot drain completely and empty the saucer to avoid the plant sitting in standing water.

  5. Adjust watering frequency based on conditions: The frequency of watering depends on factors such as humidity, temperature, and the size of the pot. Generally, Marantas require watering every 5-7 days during the growing season (spring and summer) and every 10-14 days during the dormant season (fall and winter). Keep an eye on your plant's moisture needs and adjust the watering schedule accordingly.

By following these steps and monitoring your Maranta's specific needs, you can ensure proper watering and maintain a healthy, thriving plant. Remember that consistent care is key, and always be attentive to changes in your plant's appearance or growth, as these can indicate a need for adjustments in care.
