Begonia brevirimosa, often called the Pink Begonia or Brevirimosa Exotic Begonia, is one of the most spectacular species in the Begoniaceae family. Native to the humid rainforests of Papua New Guinea, this rare species is prized for its vividly coloured foliage that looks almost hand-painted. It’s a plant that blurs the line between natural beauty and botanical art — a true showpiece for any tropical plant collector.

The large, glossy leaves are deep emerald to burgundy green with dramatic metallic pink streaks, splashes, and veins running across the surface. Each leaf is completely unique, with bold contrasts of colour that intensify as the plant matures. When grown in bright, filtered light, Begonia brevirimosa reveals an almost iridescent sheen, making it one of the most eye-catching foliage plants available.

Elegant, exotic, and unapologetically flamboyant, this Begonia transforms any collection into a tropical gallery — a living masterpiece that demands attention.

Begonia brevirimosa – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light that enhances the pink pigmentation and keeps growth compact. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch or fade the vivid colours. Too little light can lead to dull leaves and slower growth.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels slightly dry, and ensure the pot drains freely. Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water or dry out completely. During winter, reduce watering slightly while maintaining humidity.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) is essential for maintaining the leaf’s glossy texture and bright colouration. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or grow in a terrarium to maintain ideal moisture levels.

Soil and Potting

Use a light, airy, and moisture-retentive mix — compost blended with perlite, coco coir, and a little fine bark works perfectly. Good aeration prevents root rot while keeping the roots evenly moist. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh nutrients and support healthy growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leaf burn or disrupt variegation. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter when growth naturally slows.

Pruning and Maintenance

Remove any yellow or damaged leaves at the base to encourage fresh growth. Wipe the leaves gently with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and highlight their natural sheen. Rotate the plant occasionally for even light exposure and symmetrical growth.

Growth and Maturity

A moderate grower, Begonia brevirimosa typically reaches 60–90 cm in height indoors. Over time, it forms a lush, bushy shape with multiple stems. Its large, brightly patterned leaves can grow up to 20–25 cm long, giving it a striking presence even as a single specimen plant.

Common Issues

  • Crispy leaf edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Faded colours: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by mealybugs or spider mites — treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Native to the tropical rainforests of Papua New Guinea, Begonia brevirimosa was first discovered in the early 20th century and quickly became a prized ornamental species due to its bold pink variegation. It’s one of the few naturally pink-leaved Begonias in existence, making it a true rarity among tropical foliage plants.

Symbolically, its vibrant foliage represents creativity and self-expression — fitting for a plant so visually dynamic. Like other Begonias, it also contributes to better air quality by helping filter impurities, all while bringing vibrant, tropical energy to indoor spaces.
