Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. Alocasia ‘Polly’ is a compact and dramatic houseplant that brings a touch of the tropics indoors. Known for its deeply lobed, arrowhead-shaped leaves with high-gloss, dark green surfaces and thick, prominent white veins, this plant is all about statement foliage. Despite its name, it is not from the Amazon – ‘Polly’ is a cultivated hybrid from Southeast Asian Alocasia species.
Ideal for plant lovers looking for bold texture and architectural form, Alocasia ‘Polly’ fits beautifully into modern interiors, plant shelves, or exotic-themed rooms. Though a little more temperamental than some houseplants, it rewards attentive care with dramatic beauty.
🌿 Botanical name: Alocasia x amazonica ‘Polly’
🪴 Common name: African Mask Plant, Elephant Ear ‘Polly’
🌤 Light: Bright, indirect light (no harsh sun)
💧 Watering: Keep lightly moist; allow top 2–3cm of soil to dry between waterings
🌡 Temperature: 18–26°C; avoid draughts and cold
🧴 Humidity: High humidity required
🐾 Toxicity: ❌ Toxic to pets and humans if ingested
Alocasia ‘Polly’ thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light can lead to drooping and slow growth. It’s happiest near an east- or north-facing window or a few feet back from a brighter south- or west-facing one.
Keep the soil consistently but lightly moist. Let the top 2–3cm dry before watering again. Avoid soggy soil, which can cause root rot. Water less frequently in winter when the plant may enter dormancy.
💡 Tip: Always use a pot with drainage holes and avoid letting the plant sit in water.
High humidity is essential. Dry air can cause browning at the leaf edges. Increase humidity by:
Misting regularly
Using a pebble tray or humidifier
Grouping with other humidity-loving plants
Alocasia ‘Polly’ prefers warmth and stability – ideal temperatures are 18–26°C. Avoid cold draughts, sudden temperature drops, or placing it near radiators.
Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend of indoor plant compost, orchid bark, and perlite. Good drainage is key to preventing root rot.
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertiliser every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). No feeding is needed during winter dormancy.
Alocasia ‘Polly’ may enter dormancy in cooler, darker months. During this time, it may drop all its leaves – don’t panic. Reduce watering and keep the tuber dry but not bone dry. Resume normal care when new shoots emerge in spring.
Propagate by dividing the rhizomes or offsets during repotting in spring. Alocasia 'Polly' does not propagate well from leaf cuttings.
Crispy edges or browning leaves: Low humidity or inconsistent watering
Drooping leaves: Underwatering, cold draughts, or light stress
Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage
Spider mites or thrips: Check leaf undersides regularly; wipe with a damp cloth and treat if needed
Great as a sculptural centrepiece on shelves, side tables, or windowsills
Pairs well with other tropicals like Calathea, Monstera, or Philodendron
Looks dramatic in ceramic or matte black pots to contrast with its glossy leaves
