Scindapsus 'Jade Satin Aurea' is a rare variegated form of Jade Satin Scindapsus, valued for its thick, velvety leaves marked with bright yellow, lime and golden variegation. The foliage has the rich, satin texture typical of Jade Satin, but with irregular splashes and marbling that make each leaf unique. Some leaves may have only small flecks of colour, while others can emerge with broad sectors of yellow or chartreuse.

It is slower growing than standard green Scindapsus varieties because of the high level of variegation, but with the right conditions it develops into a beautiful trailing or climbing specimen.

Description

  • Botanical name: Scindapsus 'Jade Satin Aurea'
  • Plant type: Tropical trailing or climbing houseplant
  • Mature size indoors: Vines can reach 1–2m long
  • Leaf colour: Deep green with yellow, lime and golden variegation
  • Leaf texture: Thick, velvety and satin-like
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate

The leaves are typically broader and more rounded than many other Scindapsus cultivars, with a soft, almost suede-like appearance.

Care Guide

Light

Scindapsus Jade Satin Aurea prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Place near a bright east or north-facing window
  • A little gentle morning sun can help bring out stronger variegation
  • Avoid harsh midday or afternoon sun, which can scorch the yellow sections
  • Low light may cause the plant to lose variegation and produce greener leaves

Because of the yellow variegation, this plant generally needs more light than plain green Scindapsus.

Watering

Allow the top 3–5cm of compost to dry out before watering.

  • Water thoroughly and allow excess to drain away
  • Never leave the pot standing in water
  • Reduce watering during winter

This plant prefers slightly drier conditions over constantly wet compost.

Humidity

Scindapsus Jade Satin Aurea enjoys moderate to high humidity.

  • Ideal humidity: 60–80%
  • It will tolerate average indoor humidity, but growth may be slower
  • Higher humidity helps prevent brown edges and keeps the leaves looking lush

Temperature

Keep warm throughout the year.

  • Ideal range: 18–27°C
  • Avoid temperatures below 15°C
  • Protect from draughts and sudden temperature changes

Soil

Use a loose, well-draining aroid mix.

A good mix is:

  • 50% houseplant compost
  • 25% orchid bark
  • 25% perlite or pumice

The roots dislike heavy, soggy compost.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.

Too much fertiliser can damage the variegated foliage, so lighter feeding is best.

Support

Scindapsus Jade Satin Aurea can be grown trailing, but it often looks best climbing.

  • A moss pole or plank encourages larger leaves
  • Climbing can also make the variegation more dramatic
  • Trim long vines to encourage bushier growth if desired

Common Problems

Loss of Variegation

Usually caused by low light. Move the plant somewhere brighter but still out of direct sun.

Brown or Crispy Yellow Areas

The pale sections are more sensitive and may brown if exposed to direct sun, dry air or inconsistent watering.

Yellow Leaves

Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.

Slow Growth

Normal for this variety, but very slow growth can indicate low light, cold temperatures or a lack of feeding.

Reverting to Green

If a stem begins producing plain green leaves, cut it back to the last variegated node.

Propagation

Scindapsus Jade Satin Aurea is propagated from stem cuttings.

  1. Take a cutting with at least one node and one leaf
  2. Make sure the cutting has visible variegation
  3. Root in water, sphagnum moss or perlite
  4. Pot into soil once roots are established

Cuttings with more yellow variegation may take longer to root.

Pet Safety

Scindapsus Jade Satin Aurea is toxic if ingested and should be kept away from cats, dogs and small children. It contains calcium oxalate crystals which can cause irritation and discomfort.
