Sansevieria boncel ‘Variegata’, also known as the Variegated Starfish Snake Plant, is a rare and visually striking cultivar of Sansevieria cylindrica, prized for its sculptural form and creamy variegation. Native to Angola, this succulent species is part of the Asparagaceae family and is celebrated for its architectural appeal and remarkable drought tolerance.
Unlike traditional upright Sansevierias, boncel ‘Variegata’ features short, thick, fan-like cylindrical leaves that radiate outward in a symmetrical rosette. Each leaf is patterned with soft bands of green and grey, interspersed with creamy-yellow variegation that adds contrast and luminosity. Mature plants may produce slender flower spikes with clusters of small, fragrant white blossoms during the warmer months.
Compact, contemporary, and effortlessly stylish, Sansevieria boncel ‘Variegata’ is perfect for modern interiors and minimalist plant arrangements. Its unique starburst silhouette and ease of care make it an outstanding statement piece for desks, shelves, or decorative planters.
Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates a wide range of conditions, from full sun to lower indoor light. For the most vibrant variegation, provide plenty of bright, filtered light. Avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday sun, which may scorch the lighter leaf edges.
Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of problems — the thick, cylindrical leaves store water efficiently. In summer, water every 2–3 weeks; in winter, reduce to once a month or less. Always ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Temperature: Prefers 18–30°C, tolerating short drops to 12°C. Avoid cold draughts and frost.
Humidity: Adaptable to typical household humidity (30–50%). It thrives in drier air, making it suitable for homes and offices.
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, or blend equal parts compost, perlite, and coarse sand. Compact, water-retentive soils can lead to root rot. Terracotta pots are ideal, as they allow excess moisture to evaporate. Repot every 3–4 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
Feed lightly during the growing season (spring and summer) every 6–8 weeks with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, as variegated leaves are more sensitive to nutrient burn. No feeding is needed in autumn or winter.
Minimal maintenance required. Remove any damaged or aged leaves by cutting them close to the base. Dust leaves occasionally with a soft cloth to maintain their natural sheen and allow the variegation to shine through.
A slow-growing, compact succulent, reaching 20–30 cm in height and width. Over time, it produces offsets (“pups”) around the base, which can be separated and replanted once established. Mature plants occasionally flower when slightly pot-bound.
Yellow or mushy leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Brown leaf tips: Extremely dry air or inconsistent watering.
Lack of variegation: Insufficient light.
Pests: Rare, but may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites.
Sansevieria boncel ‘Variegata’ is a mutation of the fan-forming Boncel cultivar, itself a compact variety of Sansevieria cylindrica. The variegated version is especially sought after for its golden striping and symmetrical, sculptural growth habit — a living piece of modern botanical art.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, this plant is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, filtering indoor pollutants such as benzene and formaldehyde. It also releases oxygen at night, making it an excellent bedroom companion. Highly tolerant of neglect, it is one of the easiest variegated succulents to grow successfully indoors.
