Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ is a rare climbing philodendron prized for its bright yellow and lime variegation. The leaves emerge in fresh shades of green with splashes, marbling and sectors of vivid aurea colouring that can range from soft lemon to rich golden-yellow. As the plant matures, the contrast between the deep green leaf tissue and bright variegation becomes even more striking.

Each leaf is completely unique. Some may be heavily marbled, whilst others can feature dramatic half-moon sections or bold streaks of yellow across the foliage. New growth often appears especially bright before deepening slightly as it hardens off. Given the right conditions and a moss pole, Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ can grow into a large, impressive specimen with oversized leaves and strong climbing stems.

Because of the high level of variegation, some lower leaves or the yellow sections may occasionally show a little browning or marking. This is normal and more noticeable on highly variegated leaves.

Care Guide

Light
Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ grows best in bright, indirect light. Strong light helps maintain the vibrant yellow variegation, but avoid harsh direct sun as the pale areas can scorch. Too little light may cause the plant to lose variegation and produce greener leaves.

Watering
Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry before watering. Water thoroughly, then allow any excess to drain away. Avoid leaving the plant sitting in water, as this can lead to root rot.

Humidity
This plant prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally 60% or above. Higher humidity encourages larger leaves and helps prevent the yellow sections from browning.

Temperature
Keep between 18–28°C. Avoid temperatures below 15°C and keep away from cold draughts.

Soil
Use a chunky, free-draining mix. A blend of houseplant compost, orchid bark, perlite and a little coco coir works well and provides the airflow philodendrons enjoy.

Feeding
Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding through autumn and winter.

Support
Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ is a climbing variety and will benefit from a moss pole or support. This encourages stronger growth and much larger foliage over time.

Common Issues

  • Brown edges on yellow sections: often due to low humidity or direct sun
  • Yellowing leaves: usually caused by overwatering
  • Reduced variegation: the plant may need brighter light
  • Leggy growth: caused by insufficient light or lack of support

Philodendron ‘Fresh Aurea’ is an eye-catching choice for rare plant collectors, combining bold climbing growth with bright, glowing variegation that stands out in any collection.
