Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is a highly sought-after tropical hybrid celebrated for its large, variegated leaves and commanding presence. A member of the Araceae family, this hybrid is believed to originate from a cross involving Philodendron domesticum and other vining species, resulting in a stunning plant prized by collectors for both its beauty and resilience.

Each enormous, paddle-shaped leaf can grow up to 60–90 cm long and features marbled variegation in creamy white, mint, and light green set against a deep emerald background. The variation in colour and pattern is unpredictable — some leaves are heavily marbled, while others display delicate streaks of cream. The plant’s climbing growth habit and bold foliage give it a tropical grandeur perfect for interior spaces that can accommodate a statement plant.

Refined, dramatic, and undeniably tropical, Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is a collector’s favourite — an exquisite mix of structure, size, and variegated artistry.

Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Ample light encourages stronger variegation and larger leaves. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the lighter areas of the foliage, and low light, which can lead to reduced variegation and slower growth.

Watering

Water when the top 2–4 cm of soil feels dry. Keep the soil evenly moist during the growing season (spring and summer), but never soggy. In winter, allow the soil to dry slightly more between waterings. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C. Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
Humidity: Moderate to high humidity (60–80%) helps maintain vibrant foliage and glossy leaves. Mist regularly or use a humidifier, especially in dry indoor environments.

Soil and Potting

Use a rich, airy, and well-draining aroid mix — compost combined with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir provides ideal aeration and moisture retention. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh nutrients and allow for root expansion.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter when growth slows. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause root or leaf damage.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune older or damaged leaves near the base to maintain a tidy shape and encourage new growth. Wipe the large leaves regularly with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and accentuate their sheen. Provide a moss pole or trellis for climbing growth and larger leaves.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast-growing climber, Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ can reach 1.5–2.5 metres in height indoors with support. Each leaf increases in size and complexity as the plant matures, creating a lush, tropical canopy effect.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Faded variegation: Insufficient light.

  • Brown tips: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by thrips or mealybugs — treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

Background and Benefits

Philodendron ‘Jose Buono’ is a hybrid species named in honour of José Buono, an avid collector and Philodendron breeder. It was developed for its exceptional variegation, robust growth, and adaptability to indoor environments. Native to tropical conditions, it climbs trees in the wild, producing increasingly larger leaves as it gains height.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this Philodendron is known for purifying indoor air by filtering toxins and releasing oxygen. Symbolically, its large, variegated leaves represent abundance, balance, and natural harmony — qualities that make it a favourite among plant collectors and stylists alike.
