Begonia ‘Snowcap’

Product Description

Begonia ‘Snowcap’ is a beautiful cane begonia with elegant wing-shaped leaves decorated with masses of silvery white spots. The deep green foliage is heavily splashed with bright markings, creating the effect of leaves dusted with snow, which gives this variety its name.

The undersides of the leaves are often flushed with rich red or burgundy tones, adding even more contrast and interest. As the plant grows, it develops tall, upright stems with layers of spotted foliage, making it an eye-catching statement plant.

Begonia ‘Snowcap’ has a graceful, slightly arching habit and can become quite large and impressive over time. Mature plants may also produce clusters of soft pink flowers during the growing season.

Its striking foliage makes it ideal for bright rooms, plant shelves or as part of a collection of unusual begonias. It looks especially attractive displayed where the leaves can catch the light and the patterned foliage can be fully appreciated.

Please note that as Begonia ‘Snowcap’ matures, it may naturally lose some of its lower leaves. It is also normal for older leaves to occasionally show slight browning, small tears or minor marks, particularly after transport. This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the overall health of the plant.

Every plant is unique, so the exact amount of spotting, shape of the leaves and overall size may vary slightly.

Care Guide

Light

Begonia ‘Snowcap’ grows best in bright, indirect light. Plenty of filtered light will help keep the foliage healthy and encourage strong growth.

A position near an east or west-facing window is ideal. Some gentle morning or evening sun is usually fine, but avoid strong direct midday sunlight as this can scorch the leaves.

Too little light may result in slower growth and less vibrant foliage.

Watering

Allow the top few centimetres of compost to dry slightly between waterings.

Water thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain away. Begonia ‘Snowcap’ prefers evenly moist soil, but should never be left sitting in wet compost.

Overwatering can cause yellowing leaves and root rot, whilst allowing the compost to become completely dry may lead to crispy edges and leaf drop.

Humidity

This begonia prefers moderate humidity, ideally around 50–60% or more.

Higher humidity will help keep the foliage looking its best and reduce the chance of brown edges.

Avoid spraying water directly onto the leaves, as this can sometimes mark the foliage.

Temperature

Keep your Begonia ‘Snowcap’ in temperatures between 18°C and 26°C.

Avoid temperatures below 15°C and protect the plant from cold draughts.

Soil

Use a light, well-draining compost mix.

A blend of peat-free houseplant compost, perlite and a little fine bark works well, helping the roots stay healthy whilst retaining enough moisture.

Feeding

Feed every 2–4 weeks during spring and summer using a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser.

Reduce feeding during autumn and winter when growth slows.

Growth Habit and Pruning

Begonia ‘Snowcap’ is a cane begonia and naturally develops upright stems.

If the plant becomes tall or leggy, you can pinch out the growing tips or trim back the stems to encourage a fuller, bushier shape.

As the plant matures, older leaves near the base may naturally drop. This is completely normal.

Brown Leaves and Cosmetic Marks

It is common for some of the older lower leaves to show a little browning, slight tearing or small marks, especially after transport.

These are purely cosmetic and should not be a cause for concern. New leaves will continue to emerge from the top of the plant.

Pet Safety

Begonia ‘Snowcap’ is toxic if ingested, so it should be kept away from pets and children.
