Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. Gunnera magellanica, also known as Dwarf Rhubarb or Miniature Gunnera, is a herbaceous perennial plant native to South America. It is a smaller and more manageable relative of the giant Gunnera manicata. Gunnera magellanica typically grows to a height of about 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm), with a spread of 2 to 3 feet (60-90 cm). The plant features large, rounded, deeply lobed leaves that resemble those of a rhubarb plant. The leaves have a bright green color and a distinctive veined texture. Inconspicuous green flowers are produced on tall spikes that rise above the foliage during the summer.
Care Guide:
Light Requirements: Gunnera magellanica thrives in partial shade to full sun. It prefers bright but indirect light and can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight each day. However, in hotter regions, it benefits from some shade during the hottest part of the day.
Soil Requirements: Provide Gunnera magellanica with rich, moist, and well-draining soil. The plant prefers a soil pH that is slightly acidic to neutral. Ensure that the soil retains moisture well, as this plant appreciates consistently moist conditions.
Watering: Gunnera magellanica requires regular watering to maintain moist soil conditions. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during hot and dry periods. Avoid waterlogging the soil, as it can cause root rot. Mulching around the plant can help retain moisture and reduce water evaporation.
Fertilization: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring to provide essential nutrients to the plant. Follow the package instructions for the appropriate dosage. Avoid over-fertilization, as excessive nutrients can lead to excessive leaf growth and weak stems.
Division: Gunnera magellanica forms clumps over time. To control its spread and maintain its vigor, divide the clumps every few years during the dormant season. Dig up the plant carefully, separate the clumps, and replant them in suitable locations. Ensure that each division has enough roots and foliage to support growth.
Winter Care: Gunnera magellanica is hardy and can tolerate cold temperatures. In regions with harsh winters, provide protection by covering the plant with a thick layer of mulch or straw in late fall. This helps insulate the plant's crown and roots from freezing temperatures.
Pests and Diseases: Gunnera magellanica is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, occasional issues with slugs or snails may arise, especially in wet conditions. Monitor the plant regularly and take appropriate measures to control these pests, such as using organic slug repellents or manual removal.
Gunnera magellanica is an attractive and manageable option for gardeners who appreciate the unique foliage of Gunnera plants but have limited space or prefer a smaller variety. With proper care and attention, it can thrive and provide a lovely display of lush green leaves in your garden.
