Due to the sensitive and breakable nature of our products, it's understandable that damages may occur despite our meticulous packaging methods. If you find that your plant or pot has arrived in a less than satisfactory condition, please reach out to us at hello@plantsforallseasons.co.uk within a month of your delivery date. When contacting us, please provide your order reference, alongside a photo clearly showing the damaged item and its packaging, including the delivery label. We are committed to resolving such issues by offering a refund or a replacement, depending on the availability of the item in question.
We are unable to accept returns that are not related to damage because plants are inherently perishable and delicate. It's also worth noting that the plant you receive may slightly differ from the images displayed on our website. This variation is natural, given that each plant is unique and subject to seasonal growth changes.

Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Dark’ is a rare and mesmerising tropical species prized for its shimmering foliage, deep jewel-toned colouring, and compact, ground-layer growth habit. A member of the Zingiberaceae (ginger) family and native to the humid, shaded forest floors of Southeast Asia, this plant is celebrated for its iridescent, almost magical leaf surface that shifts beautifully under changing light.
The leaves are oval to slightly elongated with a velvety texture, displaying rich shades of emerald, deep green, and dusky purple. The “scintillans” name refers to its sparkling, iridescent sheen — a metallic glimmer that dances across the leaf surface like stardust when viewed from different angles. The ‘Dark’ form features intensified colouring, with deeper undertones and stronger contrast between the leaf veins and surface.
Growing as a tight, elegant rosette close to the soil, Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Dark’ offers an otherworldly presence ideal for terrariums, plant cabinets, and collectors seeking truly unusual foliage. Compact, enchanting, and highly decorative, it brings a rainforest floor aesthetic to any indoor plant collection.
Prefers low to medium, diffused light — similar to its natural habitat. Too much direct light will wash out the iridescence and may scorch the leaves. Excellent for terrariums, shaded shelves, or plant cabinets with soft lighting.
Keep the soil lightly but consistently moist, allowing the top 1–2 cm to dry slightly before watering. This species dislikes drying out completely but also cannot tolerate waterlogging. Use lukewarm, soft or filtered water to protect the delicate foliage from mineral spotting.
Temperature: Thrives between 20–28 °C. Avoid sudden temperature drops and limit exposure to air-conditioning or draughts.
Humidity: Requires high humidity (70–90%) to maintain leaf texture and iridescence. Ideal for terrariums, vivariums, or humidity-controlled plant cabinets.
Use a light, moisture-retentive yet breathable mix. A blend of fine orchid bark, coco husk, sphagnum moss, and perlite works well. Avoid dense, compact soils. Repot every 1–2 years into a shallow pot to accommodate its rhizomatous growth.
Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a gentle, diluted fertiliser. Avoid strong feeds, which can easily overwhelm the delicate root system.
Minimal pruning required. Remove ageing or damaged leaves from the base. Avoid wiping the leaves aggressively — their velvety, iridescent surface is delicate. Instead, use gentle air movement to keep them free of dust.
A slow to moderate grower that typically reaches 10–20 cm in height and spread. Grows through short rhizomes that gradually form a small, dense clump. Under ideal humidity, may produce small purple or pinkish ginger-like blooms close to the soil.
Leaf curl or crisping: Low humidity or underwatering.
Faded colouring: Too much light.
Yellowing: Overwatering or poor drainage.
Fungal spotting: Caused by water sitting on velvet leaves.
Pests: Rare, but monitor for fungus gnats in overly moist soil.
Scaphochlamys species are rarely found in mainstream houseplant collections, making Scaphochlamys scintillans ‘Dark’ highly desirable for rare plant enthusiasts. Its shimmering, velvety leaves offer a unique visual depth seen in only a handful of rainforest understory plants, giving it a mystical, jewel-like presence.
Perfect for terrarium landscapes, botanical displays, and collectors who appreciate unusual textures and iridescence, this species brings an authentic slice of the rainforest floor into the home. Its compact size also makes it ideal for small spaces or curated foliage vignettes.
