Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ is a rare and attractive wax plant valued for its beautiful silver-flecked foliage and elegant trailing vines. The name Rimba Perak roughly translates to “silver forest”, a fitting description for the plant’s distinctive leaves which are often dusted with silvery splash markings against a deep green background.

Native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, this Hoya grows naturally as an epiphytic climber, attaching itself to trees where it benefits from warm temperatures, high humidity and filtered light. The leaves are thick, slightly succulent and glossy, helping the plant store moisture and tolerate occasional dry conditions.

As the plant matures it produces long, flexible vines, making it ideal for growing in hanging pots, trailing from shelves, or trained around a trellis or circular hoop. Mature specimens may also produce clusters of waxy star-shaped flowers, typically pale cream or soft pink with a deeper centre, sometimes releasing a light fragrance.

With its decorative foliage and relatively easy care, Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ is a wonderful addition to Hoya collections and rare houseplant displays.

Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ Care Guide

Light

Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ thrives in bright, indirect light.

Ideal placement:

  • Near east or west-facing windows

  • Bright rooms with filtered sunlight

Bright conditions help maintain the silver speckling on the leaves and support healthy growth. Avoid intense direct afternoon sun.

Watering

Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings.

Typical schedule:

  • Spring & summer: Every 7–10 days

  • Autumn & winter: Every 2–3 weeks

Because the leaves store moisture, Hoyas prefer slightly drier soil rather than constantly wet conditions.

Always ensure the pot has excellent drainage.

Humidity

This tropical plant appreciates moderate to high humidity.

Ideal humidity range:

  • 50–70%

Higher humidity can encourage stronger growth and healthier foliage, although the plant adapts well to normal indoor conditions.

Temperature

Best kept in temperatures between:

18°C – 28°C

Avoid:

  • Temperatures below 12°C

  • Cold drafts or sudden temperature changes

Warm, stable conditions mimic the plant’s natural environment.

Soil

Use a very airy, well-draining epiphytic soil mix.

A suitable mix may include:

  • Orchid bark

  • Perlite or pumice

  • Coco coir or houseplant compost

This type of mix prevents waterlogging and keeps roots healthy.

Feeding

Feed lightly during the active growing season.

  • Spring & summer: Every 3–4 weeks

  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser

Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.

Growth Habit

Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ produces long climbing or trailing vines.

It can be grown:

  • Trailing from hanging pots

  • Climbing a trellis or circular hoop

Providing support can help create a fuller and more decorative plant.

Flowering

Mature plants may produce clusters of small waxy star-shaped flowers.

Tips for encouraging blooms:

  • Provide bright indirect light

  • Keep the plant slightly root-bound

  • Do not remove peduncles (flower spurs) after flowering, as Hoyas bloom repeatedly from these points.

Propagation

Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ can be propagated through stem cuttings.

Steps:

  1. Take a cutting with one or two nodes

  2. Root in water, sphagnum moss, or an airy soil mix

  3. Place in warm, bright indirect light

Roots typically develop within 2–4 weeks.

Toxicity

Hoyas are generally considered non-toxic to pets, though ingestion may still cause mild stomach upset.

Common Problems

Yellow leaves

  • Often caused by overwatering

Wrinkled leaves

  • Indicates the plant may need watering

Slow growth

  • Often due to insufficient light

Lack of flowering

  • Plant may require more light or time to mature

Summary

Hoya ‘Rimba Perak’ is a beautiful trailing wax plant prized for its silver-speckled foliage and elegant vines. With bright indirect light, airy soil and moderate watering, it grows steadily and can eventually produce clusters of delicate waxy flowers, making it a rewarding plant for both collectors and houseplant enthusiasts.
