Nephrolepis duffii, more commonly known as the Lemon Button Fern, is a compact, charming fern species from the Nephrolepidaceae family. A close relative of the popular Boston Fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), this dwarf variety is native to tropical regions and is prized for its petite size, elegant form, and delightful fragrance.
The plant produces arching fronds lined with small, rounded leaflets that resemble tiny buttons strung along the stem – hence its common name. The foliage is bright green, giving it a fresh, vibrant appearance, and when gently crushed or brushed, the fronds emit a subtle lemony scent.
Because of its compact growth habit, usually reaching 20–30 cm in height, Nephrolepis duffii is ideal for smaller spaces such as desks, bookshelves, and bathrooms. It also thrives in terrariums, where its humidity requirements are easily met. This species is particularly popular with those who love ferns but have limited space, as it brings the lush texture of fern foliage in a petite, manageable size.
Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate fronds. It will also tolerate lower light conditions, though growth may slow.
Keep soil evenly moist, but not soggy. Water thoroughly when the top of the soil feels just slightly dry. Consistency is key – these ferns dislike drying out completely or sitting in water. In drier indoor climates, increase misting to prevent fronds crisping.
Temperature: Thrives in 16–24°C. Protect from cold draughts and avoid temperatures below 12°C.
Humidity: Requires moderate to high humidity. Ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, or terrariums. Mist regularly, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier in dry environments.
Plant in a moisture-retentive but free-draining peat-free compost. A mix with added perlite or sand works well. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh the soil and maintain vigour.
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid heavy feeding, which may damage the roots. No feed is needed in autumn or winter.
Remove old or yellowing fronds at the base to encourage new growth. Trim lightly to maintain a tidy, compact shape.
Typically reaches 20–30 cm in height and spread, forming a neat, dense clump. Its slow to moderate growth rate makes it well suited for long-term container growing or terrarium use.
Crispy fronds: Often caused by low humidity or irregular watering.
Yellowing foliage: Usually a sign of overwatering or poor drainage.
Pests: Rare, but may occasionally attract scale or mealybugs.
The Lemon Button Fern has been cherished for its ornamental beauty and gentle fragrance, which adds an extra sensory layer to its appeal. Compact, air-purifying, and safe for pets, it is an excellent choice for anyone seeking a small, easy-going fern with a unique character.
